Guilford was developed in the early 20th century by the Roland Park Company, with the layout of the community designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. and the renowned Olmsted Brothers firm. Complementing the innovative site design are a collection of distinctive and architecturally significant dwellings designed by the leading architects of the day such as John Russell Pope, Laurence Hall Fowler, and Palmer and Lamdin. The walking tour will explore Guilford’s Olmsted plan, diverse architectural treasures and the neighborhood’s famous Sherwood Gardens, one of the most famous tulip gardens in North America.

SUDBROOK PARK
Sunday, October 18 from 2-4 pm
Sudbrook Park, the community which celebrates its 120th anniversary this year, is Frederick Law Olmsted Sr.'s only residential design in Maryland. In addition to its naturalistic charm, it exemplifies the key design characteristics of an Olmsted community - including a distinct entranceway, curvilinear roads, mature hardwood trees, triangular green spaces for gatherings, and the most extensive deed restrictions that Olmsted drafted to protect the design. Its historic homes include many late Victorian and early Colonial Revival styles dating from 1889 to 1920 , as well as later suburban expansion dating from the late l930's through the early 1950's.
Guided walking tour by Sudbrook Park residents Melanie Anson, author of a book about the community's history, and Roger Katzenberg, an architect with expertise in historic architecture.
